This week I have been mostly listening to new bands. Rising to the top seem to be De Rosa and Chemikal Underground have kindly provided some free tunes. They seem to take the best elements of bands like Arab Strap and the Delgados and make it into something rather special and unique.

Also on my radar are Kid Canaveral who have a catchy new record called Smash Hits out next week. I’ll tell you what though – I don’t half hate those MySpace music websites – pile of crap.

Everyone knows Oasis aren’t the most original band around, yet I’ve never been bothered too much by the fact. However the amount of songs on this new album that are strongly reminiscent of other songs and bands is astonishing. The Rolling Stones connection has been widely mentioned already but The Velvet Underground and The Stranglers also leap out as well and of course the obligatory Beatles/John Lennon connection.

I’ve not read any reviews of the album yet but it’ll probably get the usual best since Definitely Maybe/What’s The Story quotes that alway seem to accompany a new Oasis release. Personally I think their last album was a much more powerful release than this one. Time will tell.

Been listening to the new Teenage Fanclub album loads over the last couple of weeks and I have to say it’s not been doing it for me. I’m a massive TFC fan – first in line for tickets, I’ve bought everything they’ve ever done and I even used to run a TFC website – so you can imagine I don’t dismiss the album lightly. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad album by any means and there’s some great songs on there but overall it’s just kind of washed over me. My lasting impression is that the band are finally starting sound their age – making music for an older age group!

I hope time proves me wrong but to date it’s way down my list of TFC albums. Still can’t wait to see them live though!

Incidentally the Scotland On Sunday free CD that was given away at the weekend is great! Some fantastic versions of classic songs and some rare tracks. Well worth tracking down if you’re a fan – apparently they are selling well on ebay!
